My list of things that excite me is a mile long. Reading books, kayaking, riding my bike, playing golf, spending time with my girl, writing my blog, traveling, live music, art festivals, meditating, getting organized, planning my upcoming wedding, creating business programs, attending seminars, taking classes, hanging with family, coaching, playing the piano, walking, watching Under the Gunn, and the list goes on and on an on....
So often I struggle with: I should get more done. I should do a better job at the things I do. I should practice more...I should read all those books that I buy and never crack open the spine. I should. I should. I really, really, really should.
When I do the should thing -- it takes me away from all the things that I actually am doing. It minimizes how much of life I do actually squeeze in to my daily 24 hours. And I am a person who really does squeeze a lot...so, it is time to own it.
So instead of worrying about what I am not doing -- I am committed to focusing on what I am doing and being in the moment of what it is that I am doing while I am doing it.
Goals are good -- to-do lists are good -- and stealing just 10 minutes of reading the novel I have been reading for the last 3 months is good. If I can only practice golf for 30 minutes -- that is 30 more minutes than if I didn't practice. If I only walk 6000 steps in a day -- that is 6000 more than if I didn't walk. If I play two songs on the piano for a drive-by practice -- then it is more than if I never sat down at the keys. If this is the first blog I have posted in months -- then it is one more blog than I posted...well...in months.
It is about maximizing the moments and being in the moment. It is about being fully committed to what you are doing at the time you are doing it.
Last week, I spontaneously went kayaking twice -- making that a grand total of three times I have been kayaking in 2014. And it was heaven. And I just enjoyed the paddle, the water, the connection to nature. I didn't take away from my moment by thinking how I should kayak more often or when could I kayak next. I just appreciated that fact I was doing it right then.
No more shoulds...but more of a list of priorities. What is important right now? My number one...hanging with my girl. Lucky for me -- she is a go-getter, a make stuff happen person as well which means that I get to focus on priorities #2, #3, #4 or whatever priority I want right in that moment while still honoring my #1.
